Roof decking can be made of different materials, including plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Plywood is created by gluing thin layers of wood veneers together, with each layer placed perpendicular to the previous one. This construction method enhances the strength and stability of the plywood sheets. OSB, on the other hand, is made by compressing and bonding wood strands with adhesive resins. Both plywood and OSB sheets are engineered to withstand the rigors of roofing applications and provide a solid substrate for the roof covering.
There are a couple of good questions that you can ask yourself, or your roofer, to help you understand whether or not you need to be replacing your roof decking. They are: “Is there water damage?”, “Is it made of boards or sheets?”, “If boards, are there gaps greater than 1/8th inch between them?”, “Will the old decking support the weight of new materials?”, and “Do you want a roof warranty?”.
One of the primary signs that your roof decking may need replacement is the presence of water damage. Inspect your attic or crawl space for any signs of water stains, discoloration, or rot on the underside of the roof decking.
