Starting a roof replacement project is a pretty big undertaking. It requires stripping your home of something designed to protect it, and trusting the roofing contractors to install the new layers correctly.
If you choose a roofing contractor that isn’t trustworthy or experienced, you can be potentially be exposed to a lot of issues. An improperly installed roof will be far more likely to leak and prone to storm damage than a roof that was done correctly.
So, why would a roofing company that serves Chapel Hill be writing about our competition?
Our mission has been to become a source of roofing information for all homeowners in the Triangle area. We've seen a lot over the last 30 years. Some good, some bad. By sharing our knowledge and experience, you'll become a more educated consumer and hopefully have a more positive experience when repairing or replacing your roof.
Although we install over 1,000 roofs in the Triangle every year, we understand we may not be the right fit for everyone. On occasion, homeowners will ask our opinion on other roofing contractors in the Chapel Hill area.
We're never been ones to shy away from talking about our competition and the fact that there are a few good roofing companies and a whole lot of bad ones.
It's important to understand that companies can pay to be ranked highly on some of the more popular national rankings sites, so we took it upon ourselves to make a list of local roofers that have a longstanding reputation in the Chapel Hill area.
In order to help you find companies that regularly work in Chapel Hill communities, we’re going to discuss in this blog:
Before we jump into the list, please note that this list is based on what we see in online reviews and on the company websites. Also, these companies are not ranked in any particular order.
Alright, with that out of the way, let’s get started!
Cole Roofing & Construction has been family owned and operated for two generations, since 1973. The company, as its name suggests, does roof replacements & repairs, but also does new home construction, window replacements, and other home repairs. They’ve installed more than 8,000 roofs over the years, and the company makes it their mission to treat every home like it was their own. Cole has also been involved with many government construction projects, including working on the Governor’s Mansion, the NC Museum of History, and several different universities throughout the state.
Carolina United may be the youngest company on this list, only founded in 2018, but the company has an industry veteran at the helm, as founder Jody Adams has been in construction since 1987, and received his general contractors license in 2002. The company offers roofing, siding, and gutter services to the Triangle area, prides itself on being locally owned, and providing high-quality service.
They are also certified by CertainTeed as a ShingleMaster contractor, which means that they have passed qualifications set by CertainTeed, and has the ability to offer stronger warranty’s than other contractors installing CertainTeed roofing products.
Recovery Roofing was founded in Durham over 10 years ago, and has begun to develop a name for themselves across the Triangle. Their goal is to provide homeowners with storm-damaged roofs access to an easy, affordable roof repair. The company holds GAF’s Master Elite status, and also has CertainTeed’s SELECT ShingleMaster certification. Recovery works with insurance companies to make sure that homeowners are able to get the repair they need, and at a price they can afford. They also offer financing for customers who might not be fully covered, and aren’t able to pay the lump sum up front.
Chief Roofing has its headquarters in Hillsborough, and has provided roof inspections, replacements, and repairs for asphalt shingle and metal roofs to Chapel Hill and Orange County since 1986. The company has over 170 reviews on Google, and with a 4.8-star rating, you can tell that they have had plenty of customers with good experiences.
The Aluminum Company of NC is the oldest company on this list, getting its start in 1961 selling aluminum siding. The company, one of the longest lasting companies in the Triangle, began its foray into roofing in 1986, and has been a major player ever since. Now, they do all kinds of home improvement projects, primarily installing Owens Corning and CertainTeed asphalt shingles for their roof replacements.
Now that you've learned some more about the companies that do work in Chapel Hill, what could you expect when you reach out to them for a roof inspection?
If you’re looking into the costs for a roof inspection, you might be having some trouble finding a solid number from most companies. This is largely because most roofing companies have a range of prices they may charge for the inspection, depending on how large or steep your roof is, and what service you’re looking for.
Many companies offer free inspections for customers who are looking to get a roof replacement, which is our policy here at On Tops Roofing. If someone is looking for a repair, or just to get a better idea of the condition of your roof, companies will likely charge somewhere in the $100 to $200 range to cover the labor costs associated with the inspection. For reference, here in the Raleigh, NC area, our roof inspection services cost $125 in the cases where a homeowner wants an inspection for a repair, or to evaluate their roof’s condition.
Another note: if you’re a realtor, or are working with one, very often roofing contractors won’t charge you their typical inspection fee, especially if they think the roof they’re inspecting will turn into a roof replacement job in the future.
Depending on your contractor, the cost of your roof inspection could be a flat rate, regardless of the roof’s condition and pitch, or they may charge a little extra if your roof is particularly difficult to get on due to a steep slope.
Similarly if you’re looking for a repair, the company may charge you a fee for the inspection itself, before you pay for the actual cost of the repair if you decide to go through with it. Like we mentioned earlier, if you’re up front about looking for a roof replacement, a lot of roofing companies will waive their roof inspection fee, and the inspection will be more focused toward providing an accurate price estimate for the replacement, than finding and diagnosing any problems with your roof.
However, always confirm with your roofing contractor what their policy is, as every company is different, and you don’t want to be caught off guard by any surprise fees and charges.
Now that you have this list of the top five roofing companies in Chapel Hill, we hope you feel more confident in your ability to find the best contractor for your project.
As we mentioned earlier, we are a local roofing company that works in and around Chapel Hill. You may have noticed that we didn't include ourselves on this list, but that's not because we don't think we're one of the top roofing companies in Chapel Hill.
We're confident in our work, and experience, but we understand that we aren't going to be the best fit for everyone, so we want to make sure that homeowners that don't choose us will be going for a quality company that won't take advantage of them, and help them through the process.
